Coolhaus

When you have a great idea and execute it well, you don’t need any gizmos or gadgets to win people over.  The folks at Coolhaus have done just that with their made-to-order ice cream sandwiches.  Their truck is petite, not much more than a freezer on wheels with a driver seat, but you don’t need much more than that for something as good as what they have to offer.

Their menu has one item*, an ice cream sandwich, for one price, $4, but takes it to a higher level with the customizability.  Rather than a one-size-fits-all Chipwich, Coolhaus puts you in control to enjoy the exact ice cream sandwich of your dreams.  Here’s the scoop (pun? yes): You choose the type of cookie and the flavor ice cream to be smushed between them.  The cookie options include chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, ginger, oatmeal, and chocolate.  The ice creams are too many and too delicious to list.  Take a look at the picture to see what I mean (cookies on top, ice creams below).

They have seasonal flavors that run alongside their tried-and-true favorites.  Most recently I ordered pumpkin spice ice cream with gingersnap cookies.  It was devastatingly good.  The cookies are perfectly thin and soft.  You don’t have to worry about crunching through a hard cookie leaving the ice cream squeezed out the back.  This is a particularly good thing because the ice cream is so creamy that soft homemade cookies are all it can take.  You have to eat fast, especially in the Texas heat, so that you don’t lose your custom sammie all over your shoes.  To help with the ice cream-on-shoes problem, they wrap it up in edible paper for you.  Genius!

For the record, the other combos we’ve tried are snickerdoodles with coffee toffee ice cream, chocolate cookies with balsamic fig & marscapone ice cream, two mini sandwiches at Gypsy Picnic: chocolate chip with bacon ice cream and chocolate cookies with dirty mint ice cream, and finally oatmeal cookies with balsamic fig & marscapone ice cream.  So yea, we’ve dabbled a bit in the Coolhaus experience.  Get yourself over to Coolhaus ASAP for likely the best ice cream sandwich you’ve ever had.
