Jalopy Rotisserie and Press – Back to Basics

Sometimes the simpler things are, the better.  You know, “less is more” and all that.  Well I put that to the test on my second visit to The Jalopy Rotisserie and Press.  If you remember, last time I tried the molé and Ev went with the son hong, both of which were very tasty and paved the way for a second visit.  This time I figured I’d dig into the Jalopy’s roots with a simpler option: The Original.

As I walked up the steps to the ordering window, I was greeted by Nic, who was working on his tweet backlog I imagine.  Since opening, The Jalopy has more deftly maneuvered its social presence, like schedule changes and chances to win free food via Twitter.  It has definitely boosted (my) engagement with these delicious sandwiches and has hopefully driven more foot traffic their way.  Anyway, back to the food.

Like I mentioned, I knew I was getting The Original basically since the last time I visited.  The sauces we tried the first time around were good, but I wanted to get down and dirty with the true flavors of the house-rotisserie-ed chicken and unique balsamic onion marmalade.  Thanks to my Go Local Card, I got some free veggie chips seasoned to order with BBQ flavor.  I snacked on the chips while I waited for my sandwich to come down the slide (you have to see it to understand).

A few minutes later I got my Original, toasty warm and wrapped in a foil sleeping bag straight jacket.  Why “straight jacket”?  Because it’s crazy delicious*.  I know Nic has been battling with the bread to find that perfect toasted level and I think he’s very close.  As for the star of the show, the chicken was everything I had hoped it would be.  It was extremely flavorful and by no means was it dry, as all too many chicken sandwiches are.  The onion marmalade gave a great sweetness and texture that balanced the sandwich.  I’m fairly certain I enjoyed the Original more than the molé,  but as part of my “gotta try ’em all” nature, I’ll probably go with another sauced up version next time.

As an aside: Not deviating from his outgoing, friendly personality, Nic got my interested in some of his non-sandwich dessert creations.  I ultimately resisted (this time) but no doubt will be back to give one a try, like the Grilled Debbie**.

Next up?  Undecided, but a Grilled Debbie will likely be involved.
